Put Yourself Out There

Starting something new can be scary.

For some of us, the fear of failure, judgment, and what others might think of us can be overwhelming. You might feel hesitant to share your idea, initiate a career change, or take a new class. I know this feeling well. It's okay to feel fear, but don’t let it stop you. I have learned that letting fear win, keeping my next big idea to myself, always leads to failure – 100% of the time. When you don’t go out on that limb, you miss opportunities to improve, learn, and achieve your goals.

Here are my best tips for getting started when fear is holding you back:

1. Start with small tasks and be intentional. I like to plan my goals by thinking backwards write down your goal and then map out the milestones to get there. You only have to focus on one step at a time. Follow your map and make choices that will bring you closer to your goal. Every milestone will give a confidence boost, and you’ll be started on your way to success.

2. Enjoy the journey. Shift your focus from reaching the finish line and appreciate all the growth and learning you’re picking up along the way. This advice came from one of my advisors. I thought it was cliché at first, but it has resonated with me since I started practicing gratitude. Taking time to reflect on the small lessons adds value and substance to my experience that helps me grow (and I am grateful for that).

3. The company you keep really, really, really matters. Find people who believe in you. Find people with similar goals. Sharing your ideas with a supportive, encouraging peer can absolutely build motivation and confidence. Those conversations can also help you develop or refine your idea.

When we are growing and expanding our skillset, fear comes with the territory. Trying something new takes courage. It can be tough to put yourself out there. By being intentional, embracing your journey, and surrounding yourself with positive people, you can build the confidence to get started. Remember, you are worthy of great things.
