How Practicing Gratitdue Changed My Mindset

It’s not about ignoring life’s challenges, but finding the good in them. I share two tips to help build a daily gratitude habit by appreciating small moments and finding lessons in struggles.

It’s funny how something I was so resistant to ended up having such a big impact on me.

I started my journey toward gratitude thinking it wouldn’t work. I heard the same advice over and over - I was being negative, and I was not appreciating my blessings. For a long time, I felt like my frustrations with life were completely valid and I had every right to feel the way I did.

Eventually, I started to realize that holding onto negative thoughts wasn’t getting me anywhere. I began reading more about gratitude and how shifting my mindset could help me change my perspective. The concept felt like forced, “toxic positivity” at first, but I decided to try. Over time, practicing gratitude helped me realize how many blessings in my life I was taking for granted.

Gratitude itself doesn’t remove difficulties from our lives. It helps us see good in the bad times. I didn’t expect gratitude to have such a profound impact on my mindset, but it did, and I believe it can for others as well. Everyone’s gratitude list is going to look different, and that’s okay. What matters is the skills that are being built. Practicing gratitude builds the skill to appreciate what you have regardless of external circumstances.

If you’re struggling to find things to be grateful for, here are two tips that helped me shift my mindset:

1. Instead of focusing solely on what’s going wrong, try to find something you can be grateful for in the struggle. Maybe you learned something new about yourself or the challenge you’re facing helped you grow in a way you didn’t expect.

2. Don’t reserve your gratitude for only the “big” moments… it could be something as small as appreciating a coffee break. Make it a daily habit by taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for, big or small.

What are you thankful for today?
